readyboost works

READYBOOST - it WORKS!

Hello everyone -
I thought I would let you know that Vista has a real neat feature THAT REALLY works without any bugs.
Stick in your USB key and go into properties, and turn on ready boost. It takes up around 300MB of your USB key (temporarily) for prefetch, and increases vista performance.
I have a 1ghz sonoma proc, and 1 gig of ram, and still you can feel an improvement

There is a limit to the minimum of the USB key..
I tried my 128 one and it didn't work :)
what is the minimum ? 512MB ?

You need a minimum of 256mb key, I believe. More the better. 128 will not work.

I tried to use a 256MB device...you really need a 512MB because a 256 device is formatted at 235MB and therefore cannot be used by readyboost.

Shazam! I plugged in a 1GB thumb drive, and it set up 840MB for boosting system memory. It actually displayed a slider that allowed me to customize the amount to be dedicated to this task. Perhaps I can detect a little improvement. How does this work?? Does it use the flash memory as a RAM disk? Does it just add it to system RAM? Does it move part of the swap file to the flash memory?
(Parenthetically, my thumb drive is a U3 version with built-in AV, mail, and other small apps that run independently of the host computer's OS. U3 doesn't work under Vista.)

readyboost uses the memory on the flash drive as a ram disk, and loads frequently used dlls there. I have a built-in memory card reader that I never use, so I just got a 1gb card to use for readyboost, and leave my usb ports open.

Thanks for the tip. I'm successfully using my SanDisk Sansa m230 512MB mp3 player with ReadyBoost :D
I've got a 1GB ProDuo card for my digital camera, but no card reader on my laptop. I was thinking of buying a PCMCIA card reader for it - would this allow me to also use ReadyBoost, or would I need to get a USB 2.0 card reader? Any thoughts?
I'd like to leave my USB ports open if possible since I only have 2, but of course would like to have an extra gig of ram when not using my camera...
Thanks

pcmcia might be fast enough, but that would depend on both the card and the card reader. my internal card reader is fast enough, but I have some cards that aren't.
